| 授業方針・テーマ |
【An introduction to polymer science】 This course aims to provide students with basic knowledge about polymer science and will aim to improve scientific communication techniques such as pronunciation, report writing, ppt presentations and poster presentations. |
習得できる知識・能力や授業の 目的・到達目標 |
In the first part of the course, polymers will be defined and methods used for their characterization will be discussed. The range of applications for which polymers are employed will also be discussed. Issues related to plastic pollution will be discussed and ways in which this is currently being tackled will be highlighted. The second part of the course will involve the creation (by each student) of a ppt on a topic related to polymer science. The students will present their ppts towards the end of the course. Preparation of the ppt will require use of the scientific literature and search facilities available either on-line or in the library. The course will be conducted in English and students are encouraged to ask questions during classes. English beginners are welcome. |
授業計画・内容 授業方法 |
Week 1:Basic Seminar Guidance Week 2: Lecture will introduce polymers and will cover topics such as why they are important and their uses. This will include definitions, classification, characterization, and Applications. Some of the common English usage in polymer chemistry will be introduce here and the class will practice pronunciation. Week 3: A case study will look polyethylene and discuss its pros and cons. Week 4: The lectures will look at issues resulting from the overuse of plastics. This will include discussion of greener alternative materials. Week 5: Group activities (Discussion for topics). A selection of topics will be discussed that could be taken forward for more in depth by each student. One of the topics will be chosen by each student with a view to preparing a report, a ppt and a poster in the second half of the course. How to write a good report will be discussed. Week 6:Update on literature searches. Week 7:How to design a presentation using the PowerPoint program and how to produce a good poster. Students will begin work on their ppt. Week 8: Guided tour of library facilities. Week 9:Initial group presentations of ppts - each student to deliver an outline of their planned ppt. Week 10:Evaluation for the progress of the presentations through group discussion. Week 11: Poster preparations. Week 12:Students to deliver final ppt presentations. Week 13. Students to finish poster presentations and print out posters ready for week 15. Week 14:Poster session discussion. Week 15. Final discussion. |
